French Revolution/Directoire period ormolu and marble mantel clock

 

Antique French Revolutionary or Directoire period ormolu skeleton clock in fine original fire gilt ormolu with white enamel dial. Set on a black marble base above four ormolu bun feet. The clock standing upon four cylinder bases upon which two intricately decorated ormolu arches satnd. These are of the finest ormolu with concentric designs of beading, palmettes, reeding, then more beading, palmettes and beading. Holding up the clock dial itself is a pair of naked winged naiads their bodies terminating in acanthus flowers and forget-me-not flowers. Between these two figures are crossed trophies of love, a flaming torch and quiver of arrows. The convex white enamel dial with Roman hour numerals and Arabic numerals every fifteen minutes. The dial is signed above 6 o'clock "A Paris".. The gilt bronze moon hands are engraved. Surrounding the dial is a poinced and pierced surround in turn enclosed by a bezel decorated with beading and tiny laurel leaves. To the top of the clock are a pair of turtle doves in branches of laurel. The movement is a timepiece and of 8 day duration with a silk suspended pendulum. France circa 1800. 18 inches high by 10 inches wide by 5 inches deep (45 cm by 25 cm by 12.5 cm)
