A magnificent antique French Directoire mantel clock in patinated bronze and finest two colour ormolu signed Gerard Dubois and dated AN 9 in the revolutionary calendar. Set upon heavy cast feet the architectural case rises from the horizontal rectangle of the base with its superbly executed moulding to the vertical rectangle of the clock housing. The beautiful convex white enamel dial with the fine cast brass and well finished hands is signed G. Dubois a Paris. The dial is surrounded by a very fine ormolu bezel with beading and palmettes . To the spandrel corners are four ormolu rosettes in the form of leaf and dart but with forget-me-nots to the centre. To the side of the clock is a superb ormolu mount of a female head set within an ormolu diamond shape. Mounted on the top of the clock a winged cupid with roses in his hair sits before the altar of everlasting love with a butterfly in his hand and his bow, quiver and flame of love around him. Fine large movement of 8 day duration, bell striking the hours and halves by the countwheel system and the timekeeping regulated by a silk suspended pendulum. Signed within the movement Monginot and dated Ventose An 9 ( 1801). 15.5 inches high by 8 inches wide by 6 inches deep ( 38.75 cms by 20 cms by 15 cms).
