An exceptional French Empire period ormolu tazza or centrepiece basket of remarkably refined quality, dating to the early 19th century, circa 1805–1815. Executed in finely mercury-gilt bronze, the piece epitomises the sophistication and sculptural elegance associated with the finest Parisian bronziers of the First Empire.
The pierced basket is beautifully proportioned and supported by a pair of exquisitely modelled swans, their arched necks gracefully forming the handles. The quality of the chasing throughout is of an unusually high standard, with every feather individually defined by masterful graveur work. The swans possess a striking naturalism and movement rarely encountered outside the finest Empire decorative bronzes.
The oval base is richly ornamented with crisply chased Empire borders and finely worked engine-turned grounds, all raised upon finely cast paw feet. The original mercury gilding retains a wonderfully warm and luminous tone, highlighting the depth and precision of the chiselling across the entire surface.
Pieces of this calibre were created not merely as functional objects, but as sculptural statements intended for the grand interiors of Napoleonic France, where classical taste and technical virtuosity combined to extraordinary effect. The restrained architectural form, combined with the highly animated swan mounts, gives the piece both elegance and theatricality.
A rare and highly decorative example of French Empire ormolu of outstanding quality, equally suited to classical interiors or juxtaposed within sophisticated contemporary spaces.
