A fine silver and blue guilloché enamel miniature carriage clock by Henry Matthews
Birmingham, dated 1898
A particularly attractive and elegant late 19th century miniature carriage clock, housed in a sterling silver case of refined proportions and fitted with a swing handle above.
The dial is of exceptional quality, featuring a richly coloured cobalt blue guilloché enamel ground with a sunburst engine-turned pattern. This is beautifully overlaid with delicate gilt decoration in the form of scrolling swags and stylised birds in flight, lending the piece a lightness and charm that elevates it above the more standard examples. The Arabic numerals are picked out in gold, complementing the gilt minute track and decorative elements, all beneath a bevelled glass.
The case, fully hallmarked for Henry Matthews of Birmingham, is finely made with a clean architectural form, raised on small bun feet and retaining a pleasing weight and presence in the hand. The underside bears the full set of hallmarks, including the date letter for 1898.
The movement is an eight-day French full plate example, as typically supplied for these high-quality English retailed pieces, offering reliable timekeeping within a compact format.
Miniature carriage clocks of this calibre, combining fine guilloché enamel work with a fully hallmarked silver case, are increasingly sought after. The combination of strong colour, decorative finesse, and good maker attribution makes this a particularly desirable example.
