Art Deco Silver Manicure Set on Convex Glass Base
Birmingham, 1935 – Maker's mark S & M
An elegant and highly decorative Art Deco silver manicure set, complete with its original stand and three matching manicure implements. The set is mounted upon a striking stepped convex glass base with black geometric decoration, a design very much in keeping with the clean lines and modernist aesthetic of the 1930s.
The silver stand and each of the three implements are fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1935 and bear the maker's mark S & M, with matching marks throughout confirming the set remains together as originally supplied. The tools comprise a nail file, cuticle tool and manicure implement, each fitted with finely engine-turned silver handles of elongated diamond form, displaying a pleasing guilloché-like texture that catches the light beautifully.
The contrast between the bright silver fittings and the geometric glass base creates a particularly sophisticated display piece, representative of the fashionable dressing-table accessories produced during the height of the Art Deco period. Such complete sets are becoming increasingly difficult to find, especially retaining their original stand and with matching hallmarks throughout.
A charming and practical survivor from the interwar years, equally suited to display in an Art Deco interior or as part of a collection of silver dressing-table accessories.
