A Fine Pair of English Regency Gilt Bronze and Statuary Marble Owl Candlesticks English, Circa 1810–1820, each having the massive threaded rods typical of the period with pierced nuts. A charming and unusual pair of English Regency gilt bronze and statuary marble candlesticks, modelled with finely cast owls, dating from the early nineteenth century. Each candlestick stands upon a substantial circular grey marble base supporting a finely turned column of white statuary marble. The columns are surmounted by crisply cast gilt bronze owls standing alert with folded wings, their carefully chased plumage and expressive features demonstrating the high quality of the bronze work. Above each owl is a finely knurled drip pan supporting the original gilt bronze candle nozzle. The owl, long associated with wisdom and the classical world through its connection with the goddess Athena, became a popular decorative motif during the Regency period, reflecting Britain's fascination with the art and architecture of Ancient Greece. These elegant candlesticks perfectly capture the refined neoclassical taste of the period, combining architectural marble forms with finely sculpted bronze ornament. The contrast between the warm mercury-gilt bronze and the cool white statuary marble is particularly striking, while the restrained proportions allow the sculptural quality of the owls to take centre stage.
