Swiss Silver & Imperial Yellow Guilloché Enamel Miniature Alarm Carriage Clock by E. Mathey-Tissot retailed by Tiffany A particularly attractive and rare Swiss miniature silver and imperial yellow guilloché enamel alarm carriage clock, made circa 1910 by E. Mathey-Tissot & Co., with movement signed Nocturne, retaining its original fitted leather travelling case. The diminutive rectangular case is exceptionally finely decorated on all five visible sides with translucent imperial yellow enamel laid over an intricate engine-turned guilloché ground. Each enamel panel is framed by a striking double black enamel border, providing a particularly elegant contrast with the vibrant yellow enamel and polished silver mounts. The clock is raised upon a substantial stepped agate base, its cool grey colouring complementing the yellow enamel beautifully. The front is centred by a circular white enamel dial with raised Arabic numerals and finely shaped hands. Opening the hinged rear door reveals the high-quality 8 day Swiss movement incorporating the alarm mechanism, with separate regulation for the going and alarm trains. Mathey-Tissot & Co., based at Les Ponts-de-Martel in the Swiss canton of Neuchâtel, became particularly renowned during the early 20th century for sophisticated miniature travelling and desk clocks. The firm specialised in pendulettes de voyage, frequently combining complicated movements with silver, guilloché enamel and precious or semi-precious stone cases. The Nocturne name is encountered on particularly fine Swiss miniature carriage and travelling-clock movements of this period and is closely connected with the specialist production of E. Mathey-Tissot. Surviving Nocturne clocks include elaborate eight-day and repeating examples in silver, guilloché enamel and hardstone, while movements signed Nocturne were also supplied for clocks retailed by Cartier. Most importantly, the clock retains its original fitted leather travelling case, itself marked TIFFANY & CO., a wonderful survival showing the clock was retailed by Tiffany & Co. The fitted case opens from both sides to allow the clock to be displayed while remaining protected. The combination of imperial yellow guilloché enamel, silver, agate, alarm complication, miniature proportions and original Tiffany & Co. fitted case makes this a particularly desirable example of Swiss luxury horology from the Belle Époque.
