A fine quality French gilt bronze carriage clock retailed by the celebrated London firm of Charles Frodsham, housed in a classic corniche case with bevelled glass panels and retaining its original Morocco leather travelling case. The crisp white enamel dial is signed "Chas. Frodsham, Clockmaker to the Queen, 84 Strand, London" and displays elegant Roman numerals with blued steel moon hands. The movement is visible from every angle through the glazed case, allowing the finely finished wheelwork and escapement to be fully appreciated. The substantial eight-day movement is fitted with a platform lever escapement and strikes the hours and half-hours on a coiled gong. In addition, the clock incorporates the desirable hour repeating mechanism, activated by the push button set into the top of the case, allowing the last struck hour to be repeated on demand—a feature found only on superior carriage clocks of the period. Although retailed by Charles Frodsham, one of England's most prestigious horological houses, the movement was manufactured in France, reflecting the close relationship between London's leading retailers and the finest Parisian carriage clock makers during the late nineteenth century.
