Antique ormolu French Charles X mantel clock of winged Psyche.
A delightful antique Charles X period French ormolu mantel clock of a winged "Psyche" sitting on the clock with her feet on an elaborate Empire stool. In her hands she is holding a butterfly as an allegory of love. She has her hair up and is wearing loose fitting classical robes.To her right is a fine classical urn on a pedestal. The rectangular base has a fine mount to the front in high relief and illustrating cupid firing an arrow of love towards a maiden reclining on a floral swag encircled wioth ribbons. Surrounding this mount are vines and grapes and to each side of the mount are torches of everlasting love. The whole is held up on Acanthus bracket feet. The dial is gilt bronze and has Breguet style moon hands. The dial is surrounded by a fine ormolu bezel and around the bezel are applied mounts of roses. The movement is key wound, of 8 day duration, striking the hours and halves on a bell by means of a countwheel. The clock is regulated by a silk suspended pendulum. This clock is a highly romantic and is loaded with allegories of love and no doubt was originally given as a wedding or engagement present. It is in excellent original conition with the original movement and original ormolu. France circa 1820. 15.5 inches high by 11 inches wide by 4.25 inches deep(38cms by 27.5 cms by 10.625 cms ).
