Antique mantel clock, French Louis XVI period ormolu signed Cronier a Paris on dial and movement.
Antique and early Louis XVI mantel clock in ormolu on an antique Vert marble base. The subject is that of Juno who can be seen leaning against the clock drum spinning and with a peacock at her feet. The clock sits on a marble base above which is a fine ormolu moulding of stiff leaf design. The hem of her dress is decorated with laurel leaf design and the dial of the clock is surrounded by a mount of laurel leaf. Juno sits upon a tasseled cushion. The superb dial of white enamel ( 5 inch diameter ) has Roman hour numerals and Arabic minute numerals. It is signed Cronier a Paris. The hands are beautifully pierced and gilt. The large movement with flat bottomed plates ( typical of the period) is beautifully made. It is of 8 day duration and strikes the hours and halves on a bell by means of a countwheel. The clock is regulated by means of a silk suspended pendulum. The backplate of the movement is also signed Cronier a Paris. Probably Jean-Francois Cronier who died in the yeas XI aged 56. He worked in the Rue des Arcis. France circa 1780. 13 inches high by 17 inches wide and 7 inches deep ( 32.5 cms by 42.5 cms by 17.5 cms).
