A very fine and unusual Grand Piano sewing box.
The carcase of high quality flame mahogany with gilt bronze mounts and ebonised legs.
Lift the lid and the sewing compartment is revealed with Palais Royal mother of pearl sewing items.
However also in this compartment is a keyboard laid into satinwood and the keys in mother-of-pearl. I have never seen this in a musical piano sewing box before.
If you depress a set of keys on the left hand side it sets off the music box fitted in the compartment below the sewing tools.
Once the music stops it is possible to change the tune by depressing one of two further sets of keys to the right of the start keys.
Photographs show how the system works, with a rocker mechanism to change the tune sequence. It is a simple but very easy, reliable and pleasing system.
The Grand Piano is French and dates from circa 1830.
Width 12 inches by 7.75 inches deep and 6.5 inches high ( 30 cms by 9.375 cms by 16.25 cms).
