A fabulous pocket sized version of this most iconic late 19th century bronze of "David after the Battle", with David sheathing his sword with his foot on the head of Goliath by Marius Jean Antonin MerciƩ (1845-1916) This subject received the Medal of Honour when it was shown at the Paris Salon des Beaux Arts.
The famous bronzier Barbedienne, clothed the original naked figure of David and produced it in 5 sizes, this being the smallest.
This bronze is in superb condition except that the sword blade appears to have been broken at some point but there is a proper hardly noticeable braised repair and the bronze is signed to the base.
France circa 1890.
