Antique Industrial automaton clock in the form of a ship's capstan.
Antique Industrial automaton clock in the form of a ship's capstan. A fine model in excellent condition and perfect working order. Set upon a marble base, the capstan is of silvered bronze decorated with marine themes such as an anchor, boat davits, chains, lifebouys and rope wound around the centre. The top of the base with square holes representing where the handles to turn the capstan would fit. The copper area above,, with the four rotating dials sits on the top of the capstan and this all rotates. The dials include two time dials and temperature and a barometer. To the top of the copper area sits a fine compass. The clock is by Guilmet, made in France in around 1880. The rotating movement is wound by a separate movement in the base but wound from the side, the time is wound through one of the dials. The clock is 21.5 inches high (53.75 cm).
