Antique English Georgian Egyptian style mantel clock.
A fine and very rare clock with a
green and brown patinated bronze base below a large rectangle of Derbyshire black marble.
Mounted to the top of the clock is a gilt bronze winged sphinx.
Below the dial is a magnificent cast and gilt bronze applied mount of Horus.
Applied to the base is another fine mount, this one of lightning bolts and wings.
The dial is of white enamel with blued steel hands while the movement is a lovely English fusee timepiece movement with elaborate back cock. The clock runs beautifully and is a 30 hour duration.
The backplate is signed for
J. Cripps, London. No 955. This maker isn't noted in Baillie but Baillie notes
a Thomas Cripps working in London before 1757, this is likely to be his son.
14.5 inches high by 8.5 inches wide by 5 inches deep ( 36.5 cm by 21.25 cm by 12.5 cm).
