The Blue boy painting, painted in 1779, was perhaps Thomas Gainsboroughs most famous work, and was thought to be a painting of Jonathan Buttall (1752–1805), the son of a wealthy hardware merchant, although this has never been proven.The base of the compact with fine engine turned, blue enamel.
