Silver gilt and enamel compact. The lid decorated with a wonderfully hand painted picture of Gainsborough "Blue Boy". The Blue boy painting, painted in 1779, was perhaps Thomas Gainsboroughs most famous work, and was thought to be a painting of Jonathan Buttall (1752–1805), the son of a wealthy hardware merchant, although this has never been proven.The base of the compact with fine engine turned, blue enamel. With silver content mark 925. 60mm. Likely French, 20th century.
