Antique French Empire Miniature ormolu mantel clock of Diane in a chariot
A fine French Empire miniature ormolu mantel clock of Diane the Huntress in a chariot being pulled by a stag or deer. The original fire gilded mercury ormolu in two tone matt and burnished finish. In Roman mythology, Diane was the goddess of the hunt, nature and the moon. Deer were especially sacred to her. She stands in the chariot, with bow in one hand, and a quiver of arrows on her back. The fine ormolu bezel surrounds the white enamel, convex dial, which has the hours marked in roman numerals, and is signed Bentley & Beck on the dial. The early movement is an extremely fine flat bottomed 8 day English fusee timepiece with lever escapement. It is also signed on the backplate Bentley and Beck and dated 1798. 20cm high by 19cm long and 7cm deep
