Pair of antique early 19th century blackamoor candlesticks.
A most unusual pair of patinated bronze and original fire gilded ( mercury) ormolu blackamoor candlesticks. Three patinated bronze blackamoor heads are set on an ormolu stem terminating in three pairs of patinated bronze blackamoor feet. The circular base ( made in three parts ) decorated to the lower edge with knurling and the top edge with beading. The top of the base decorated with trailing vine leaves and bunches of grapes while the outer edge has a guilloche decoration. The step to the base again decorated with knurling and beading. The ormolu stem decorated with Amthemion and Forget-me-nots. Above the three blackamoor heads the underside of the candle drip pan is decorated with closely interwoven leaves. The candle nozzle itself is decorated with knurling, guilloche and beading decoration. Probably Baltic or Russian. 8.5 inches high with 3 3/4 inch diameter base.
