A most unusual pair of early 19th century patinated bronze candlesticks. Of triform shape the base is set on bun feet and from the corners of base rise three "faisceau", bundles of sticks bound by hide signifying "union makes strength" and surmounted by an axe head a symbol used at the time of the French Revolution and also in ancient Rome. From the centre of the top plate a candle sconce with leaf decoration is set on a central stem. Circa 1830. French or Italian. Height 10 inches ( 25 cms).
