A large and rare Italian Grand Tour version of Europa and the Bull. Of massive proportions, the scene illustrates Europa being led away on the back of Jupiter in the form of a bull. He had fallen in love with Europa and in order to seduce her assumed the shape of a bull and mingled with the herds of Agenor ( her father)., while Europa and her attendants gathered flowers in the meadow. She caressed the beautiful animal and gathered the courage to sit upon his back whereupon he carried her off to Crete, resumed his original shape and declared his love to the nymph who subsequently bore him several children. 31.5 inches high by 25 inches wide and 11 inches deep ( 79 cms by 62 cms by 27 cms).
