A fabulous Italian sculpture in finest statuary marble of the musical cupid taken from Antonio Canova's ( 1757-1822) superb sculpture of the languorous "Fountain Nymph" commissioned by Sir Charles Long, the future George IV's artistic advisor, for the Prince Regent in June 1816. It arrived in Portsmouth with "The Three Graces" and was installed at Carlton House in June 1819. ( Now in Buckingham Palace). The subject of a Naiad lying on a lion's pelt beside a spring awakened by the sound of a lyre plucked by Cupid. The musical cupid was copied in the second quarter 19th century by Canova's assistant Leandro Biglioschi. This may well be by him. 19 inches high by 19 wide and 9 inches deep ( 48 cms by 48 cms by 23 cms). Circa 1825.
