An unusually small French Romantic period mantel clock. Constructed of patinated bronze and original fire/mercury gilt ormolu ( bronze dore). The fine figure of " Hope" as a young woman with flowing dress with one hand on an anchor ( as an iconic representation of commerce) and a cornucopia further to her right as an allegory of plenty. As well as being the last item left in Pandora's box after all earth's ills were let loose Hope was also closely tied in with trade. The movement is a silk suspension regulated timepiece of 8 day duration. The movement is signed on the reverse in script Leroy a Paris for a very famous family of clockmakers.
