This is probably the most attractive and unusual of the French Portico clocks. Constructed entirely of fire or mercury gilded ormolu, burnished and mat. Both the design and quality of mounts indicate an outstanding clock. What makes it exceptional is the mystery element of the clock and that the motion is driven by the clock movement encased within the pendulum bob and therefore the pendulum is being driven from the bottom of the pendulum rather than the top as is usual. Grid iron pendulum on knife edge, pinwheel escapement, bell striking on a countwheel. Numbered 39. Signed Leroy. Dated 1822 1820. 21.5 inches by 11.5 inches wide by 4.75 inches deep ( 52.5 cms by 28 cms by 12 cms deep. See Tardy " La Pendule Francaise" pp 372 for an identical clock.
