A quite magnificent Italian or French Grand Tour bronze of the "Centaur and Eros". Eros is seen riding on the back of the figure of the Centaur who is straining to his right, his hands can be seen to be bound behind his back , presumably bound there by love ( Eros). This manificent bronze is set on a large piece of Sienna marble. It may be that the bronze is French since the quality is so high and since a marble version is in the Louvre. The Louvre centaur and cupid is a Roman copy of a Greek statue by a sculptor of Aphrodisias in Anatolia. Date: C1st - C2nd AD. This bronze dates from circa 1780. 22.25 inches high by 15 inches wide and 8.5 inches deep ( 56 cms by 37.5 cms by 21.25 cms.
