Whimsical French Empire small size dog clock with child.
A fine and unusually small French antique dog clock. The ormolu oval base with applied mounts of ivy and standing upon four barrel feet. The dog ( possibly a bull terrier) in patinated bronze is shown holding a gilt bronze basket in which is a watch movement. The dog's mouth is articulated to enable the basket to be fitted. Upon the dog's back is a gilt bronze figure of a child holding a bunch of grapes in one hand and the winding key for the clock in the other. The watch, front wind and with beautiful enamel dial and blued steel hands. The watch is an early 19th century fusee with superb backcock and steelwork is signed Gme. Gille A PARIS No 255. A lovely and unusual piece. Circa 1810. 7.5 inches high by 7.5 inches wide by 3.75 inches deep ( 18.75 cms by 18.75 cms by 9.4 cms).
