A very attractive French Louis XVI mantel clock. The oval white marble base set on four ormolu toupee feet and inset with ormolu mount. Two black marble pillars with ormolu capitals and bases rise from the base and are decorated by entwined ormolu laurel leaves turning in opposing directions. Also set on the base is a white marble urn in neo-classical style with lion's head masks and chains. The clock movement and dial is supported within a white marble casing held between the pillars. The clock is surmounted by an urn with floral and fruit ornolu finial. Two classical urns sit atop each column. The white enamel dial is signed Gavelle L'e a Paris and is most unusually decorated with floral motifs in gold around the dial inset with tiny jewelling. The hands are typical of the period being fleus de lis in gilt bronze. The movement is of 8 day duration striking the hours and halves on a bell, flat bottomed plates and visible silk suspension pendulum ( not shown). The backplate of the movement is fully engraved Gavelle L'e a Paris ( Pierre Gavelle Master in 1771. Rue Saint Denis 1785. Became a deputy in 1785. Rue aux Juifs in 1800 died in the Year XI at the age of 49). 16.5 inches high b 9 inches wide by 4 inches deep ( 41 cms by 22.5 cms by 10cms).
