French antique Napoleon III mantel clock of Cupid carrying time.
A very finely worked and beautifully designed mantel clock of the Napoleon III period. Set upon a shaped and reeded base of finest white marble with applied ormolu floral mounts. The figure of Cupid stands with his legs firmly planted holding the clockwork in the form of an orb on his shoulders. Between his legs are Cupid's trophies of love, viz bow, quiver and flame. The orb is in deep blue enamelled bronze as an iconic representation of the sky with a myriad of applied bronze stars. Convex white enamel dial with fine gilt bronze hands. 8 day bell striking movement with platform lever escapement. French. Circa 1880.16 inches high by 7.75 inches wide and 4 inches deep ( 40 cms by 19.4 cms by 10 cms).
