A fine patinated bronze Italian Grand tour copy of a Rennaissance "scorpion" inkwell.
Set on three legs the body of the scorpion having acanthus decoration with a hinged lid with a berry finail. To each side of the inkwell is a pen or candle holder. The scorpion's tail is in the form of a horses head with a long neck. To the front of the scorpion is the head of a winged bull with an articulated lower jaw which could be used to hold paper in place or cards. Circa 1860. 7 inches wide by 6.5 inches deep and 5.5 inches high ( 17.5 cms by 16 cms by 13.75 cms).
