A most attractive French late 19th century mantel clock. The sleepy case in patinated bronze, gilt bronze and a wonderfully coloured griotte marble. Set on a shaped marble base with gilt bronze drapes and 5 gilt bronze feet, the subject is that of a winged cupidplaying drum and cymbals with a pan pipe at his feet. A quite fabulous bronze cupid. The movement and dial of the clock set within the drum, fine white enamel dial with swags painted between the numerals. The hands of gilt bronze.
The movement is of 8 day duration striking the hours and halves on a bell. The movement is regulated by a cylinder escapent removing the need for a pendulum. The backplate of the movement is stamped "Marti et cie medaille D'Argent 1889". Marti were one of the top three makers in the late 19th century. Circa 1895. Marti et cie won a gold medal in 1900 so this clock has to date before then and after 1889. 16.5 inches tall by 10.25 inches wide by 6.5 inches deep ( 41.25 cms by 25.6 cms by 16.25 cms).
