Antique urn clock of porcelain and ormolu signed Balthazar.
A magnificent antique French urn clock in untouched fire gilt ormolu and Sevres porcelain. The pedestal which houses the clock movement and dial is set upon four toupee feet decorated with stiff leaf decoration, the shaped base with applied ormolu rosettes. Running around the base is a moulding of beading. To the four corners are reeded columns and in the spandrel corners around the dial are floral mounts. The white enamel dial is signed Balthazard a Paris and the dial has Roman hour numerals and arabic minute numerals. The dial is protected by a convex glass within an ormolu bezel. The two sides of the pedestal base and the back door are decorated in a sympathetic manner to the dial with spandrel corners and an elaborate bezel with concentric circles of beading and Greek key pattern containing superb Sevres porcelain plaques in Vincennes Sevres style with bouquets of flowers to the sides and birds to the back in a Blue Celeste ground. The urn sits upon a spreading socle consisting of mouldings of rope twist, acanthus leaf, Greek key pattern with flowers within and rising to a reeded stem. The cup holds a fine Vincennes Sevres style urn in Bleu Celeste with a fine relief panel of HO-Ho birds in a simple landscape surronded with gilded decoration. To the reverse of the urn is a similar panel with finely painted flowers within. The beautifully cast ormolu including superb bacchic masks to the sides of the urn attached to which are acanthus handles between which lie swags of ormolu oak leaves and acorns. The clock is surmounted by a porcelain cover with bud finial. The movement is an 8 day bell striking movement striking the hours and halves on a bell by means of a countwheel. The time is regulated by a silk suspended pendulum. The backplate is signed Balthazard a Paris. Circa 1830, the porcelain possibly 18th century. 16 inches by 6 inches square at base (40 cms by 15 cms ).
