A rare and fine mid 19th century three train musical box with unusual military theme. The lid of the music box has a scene with two soldiers one pulling the other who is hanging on to the tail of a boar and in Script to the base the words "TIENS FERME" or " Hold your ground", the proud motto of The 3rd Regiment of Engineering created in Grenoble September 11, 1814, from three battalions of sappers and miners with campaigns during the Revolution and the Empire all veterans participated in most campaigns. Nine battles listed in the folds of its flag include Castle Morea 1828, Algiers 1830, Constantine 1837, Sevastopol 1854-1855. The French key wound movement with mother-of-pearl buttons for start stop and tune change. Encased in a rectangular box made of "Bois Durci" ( invented and patented in France and England in 1854 by Francois Charles Lepage and is a mixture of sawdust and albumen) impressed with various designs to top, sides and base 4.25 inches wide by 3 inches deep by 1.5 inches high ( 10.6 cms by 7.5 cms by 3.75 cms).
