A very rare pair of Blue John urns mounted in ormolu. The urns dating from the last quarter of the 18th century are of a good rich purple colour. The shape is good and they exhibit the ribbing typical of the late 18th century.
On cleaning the mounts it has been revealed that the mount holding the Blue John is bronze that has been "French Plated", a term indicated that silver has been fired on using mercury in the same way gold is fired on bronze becoming ormolu. This is a very rare process.
England circa 1780.
