Antique French Empire mantel clock signed Picnot Pere a Paris.
A very attractive French Empire period ormolu mantel clock of small size. The rectangular base set on four well decorated toupee feet with a moulding of stiff leaf decoration. The case is then stepped on each side of the clock housing is a step with applied to each is a mount of a baiting swan sitting on a floral bough. Standing on the left hand step is a very well sculpted figure of a winged cupid playing his harp. On the step to the right is an everlasting flame to which is attached another harp. To the centre of the clock below the dial is a wreath of laurel and forget-me-not with the names of the great writers Homere and Virgile within. The wreath I surrounded in further foliage including Acanthus and Honeysuckle. To the top of the clock are two volumes of books and another laurel wreath leaning against them. The white enamel dial signed with the name Picnot Pere a Paris ( known to have been working in the Rue du Fosses Montmartre in 1812) and having blued steel Breguet hands is surrounded by a fine ormolu bezel with concentric circles of beading and of leaf and dart decoration. The 8 day movement striking the hours and halves on a cast bell by means of the countwheel system and regulated by a silk suspended pendulum. The movement is dated 1817. France .
