French Louis XVIth mantel clock in ormolu and marble by Gavelle L'aine a Paris
A very fine quality antique French Louis XVIth mantel clock. With base of white Carrera marble and obelisks of another richly veined marble. The obelsiks are mounted in the finest ormolu and surmounted by ormolu ball finials. The base surrounded by beautifully decorated posts with original ormolu chains, all standing upon eight ormolu toupee feet. The dial and movement slung between the obelisks in a drum case. The dial of convex white enamel over copper and signed Gavelle L'Aines Paris with Arabic minute and hour markers, fine original Louis XVI fleur de lys hands and asymetric winding holes. The high quality movement with flat bottomed plates, numbered countwheel strike on a bell, silk suspended visible pendulum and also with the Gavelle signature engraved on the backplate. Standing upon the drum case is a well finished bronze of a classical woman, possibly one of the muses. All the ormolu original and mint. France circa 1785.
