Antique German ormolu mantel clock in French Romantic style circa 1830.

Antique German ormolu mantel clock in French Romantic style circa 1830.
Unusual and rare German early 19th century ormolu mantel clock in the Gothic or Romantic style popular in France circa 1830. The double rectangular case set upon fine bracket feet. The base with a freize cast in high relief of a couple having a romantic tryst in a classical garden strewn with columns with twisted vine and musical instrument around, a woman spinning to the left and a soldier keeping guard to the right. A troubadour, beautifully cast and with fine clothes stands to the left of the clock face while to the righ are trophies of war including spears, banners, plumed helmet, sword and shield. To the top of the case is a musical stand with music sheet set upon it. The gilt dial with a raised floral centre is indistinctly signed " ****** in Berlin". It is surrounded by a fine ormolu bezel of roses and above the dial the case is edged with harebells and delicate leaves to the top. The movement is most unusual an unlike any French movement. It has a silk suspended pendulum and strikes the hours and halves on a bell but the clicks are mounted on the backplate and has large diameter going barrels that protrude beyond the movement plates, both things that one never sees in French movements. The case is well made and the casting is outstanding. A very unusual clock, unlike anything produced in France, robust yet very delicate, a great piece for a collector of this genre of clock as both the movement and the case are quite distinct. 18.5 inches high by 13 inches wide by 5 inches deep (47cm by 34cm by 12.5 cm). Berlin, Germany c.1830.
