Antique French mantel clock of Venus and Cupid in marble and ormolu.
Antique ormolu and white marble Louis XVIth mantel clock of Venus and Cupid atop the dome top of the clock. Cupid is stretching towards Venus but she is holding a dove away from him, emblematic of love being out of reach. The clock sits on six ormolu toupee feet. The base is inset with beautifully cast and fire gilt mercury floral mounts. To the front of the vase are other very finely cast floral mounts. The movement is an 8 day silk suspension movement striking the hours and halves by means of a countwheel. The dial is silvered and has Roman chapters as hours and blued steel hands. France circa 1785, the movement and dial circa 1820. 14.75 inches high by 10.75 inches wide by 5 inches deep ( 37 cms by 27 cms by 12.5 cms).
