A fine and beautifully carved late 19th century Italian version of Canova's famous image of Pauline de Borghese lying on a day bed. The image at the time was shocking, being that of a member of the Royal household sculted or even viewed in a state of semi nudity. This version is in creamy alabaster with rich dark brown tones typical of the material. Beautifully carved sculpture of a beautiful woman. Italy circa 1870. Height 15 inches by 28 inch width and 8 inch depth ( 37.5 cms by 69 cms by 20 cms).
