A Thomas Weeks desk standish of a rare and unusual form.
Set upon a Derbyshire black marble base a figure of Cupid kneels on a stool with his arms resting on a desk ( which is the inkwell), in contemplation. The desk with reeded legs, drapes and decorated with Anthemion and forget-me-not flowers.
The desk is engraved with the signature "Weeks's Museum" to the front and the back.
To the left a pen holder in the form of a quiver stands in a shallow dish which is engraved on two sides " Pour des Paine d'Cacheter".
The ormolu is entirely original and in mint condition. The casting and chasing is quite superb, the graveur has woked extensively on the body of the cupid to add texture and depth.
A fine and very rare piece.
