Antique French 19th century mantel clock of Cupid floating over clouds.

Antique French 19th century mantel clock of Cupid floating over clouds.
A very rare French ormolu mantel clock of cupid floating upon clouds with massive knife edge pendulum. The rectangular base of the clock stands upon bracket feet decorated with palm fronds. The base itself has a fine bold relief plaque to the front of a winged Cupid lying among rushes and other flora holding a bunch of grapes and watching a pair of doves on a well. There is a fine moulding of leaves. A rod rises from the base to which is attached the movement, dial and the figure of cupid floating above holding drapes that fall either side of the dial and below. The dial is richly decorated with vine leaves and grapes surrounding the 12 hour cartouches with further rich decoation to the centre. The hands are of blued steel and are of Breguet moon form. The pendulum is a tour de force and is superbly cast and finished and consists of a large pebdulum bob with a beautifully cast bacchanalian woman's head to the centre with vine leaves and grapes covering her hair. Then in a concentric circle are pierced and beautifully cast rings of grapes and vine leaves surrounding the centr bezel. The movement is of 8 day duration and strikes the hours and halves on a bell.
