Antique English Regency mantel clock of Cybele sitting on her throne.

Antique English Regency mantel clock of Cybele sitting on her throne.
A rare antique English Regency mantel clock of a Cybele sitting upon a throne holding the clock in her hands. The massive bronze of the Goddess exhibits an outstanding quality of casting and finishing. Several slightly different models of this clock are known in France dating from around 1800. This clock differs from each of the French models and is the only known English model to exist. The figure of this particular clock sits upon a throne of white statuary marble and rouge griotte. She holds the clock movement and dial in her hands and upon her lap. She wears classical dress and has her shoulders bare. Her hair is braided and the casting and finishing involved in her face and hair is quite extraordinary in its quality. The dial is of white convex porcelain and has blued steel moon style hands. The movement is of 8 day duration and is an English fusse timepiece movement. The Goddess cybele was worshipped from the greatest antiquity and was generally considered to be the mother of the gods. She is known in both Greek and Roman myths and also far earlier in Phrygian times and her roots are believed to be neolithic. A 3rd century bc marble of Cybele in the Musée de l'Agora antique d'Athènes exhibits very similar features to this bronze. English Regency circa 1810. 18 inches high by 9 inches wide by 8.5 inches deep ( 45 cms by 22.5 cms by 21 cms).
