Antique English Regency campaign medicine or apothacary cabinet in well figured mahogany with profuse brass inlay and marquetry.
The twin doors with single lock and secondary bolt opening to reveal an arrangement of bottles, all with labels and contents, four further drawers containing further bottles, scales and weights, mortar and pestle with other various items. All drawers have recessed brass handles as does the top of the cabinet.
A hidden recess in the back of the cupboard probably used for narcotics and poisons.
All the bottles are labelled for Llewellyn Brothers Chemists and Druggists St. Clears. This is a town in Glamorgan, Wales.
Too big to casually carry around and far too comprehensive even for a great house, the recessed carrying handles, ring bolts to the sides of the cabinet tend to indicate that this cabinet or chest was to be used on campaigns or by a Navy surgeon and may originally have had a further case into which it fitted. Whoever owned it, he was a wealthy man as the quality is sumptuous.
England circa 1820.
18.5 inches high by 12 inches wide by 8 inches deep ( 46.25 cms by 30 cms by 20 cms).
