Silver centrepiece in Retour d'Egypt style.

Silver centrepiece in Retour d'Egypt style.
A large Egyptian Revival silver centre piece candle holder by John Newton Mappin and fully hallmarked for London 1886. Set on an ebonised breakfront base held up by four massive winged paw feet. To the centre is an enormous silver candlestick of tapering cylindrical form. Around the base a floral decoration. To the large centre area are applied silver mounts of Venus, Cupid and to the front and back and to each side a figure of classical maidens, one representing Plenty and the other Wisdom. Above this is a fine cast freize of trailing forget-me-not flowers and further up a moulding of stiff leaf and dart. This rises to the candle holder which is a very fine cast of the heads of three classical women with long braided hair. To each side of this candlestick on bow ended rectangular plinths are fine cast models of sphinxes with tail over their backs, exquisitly cast. The inscription reads:- Presented to J. Gardner Esq by the membership of the NEWMARKET AND THURLOW HUNTin appreciation of his valuable services during the seven seasons of his Mastership. July 18th 1890. 24 inches wide by 14 inches high by 12 inches deep ( 60 cms by 35 cms by 30 cms).
