Antique ivory, silver and shibayama panelled carriage clock by William Thornhill of London, hallmarked for London 1880.
Exceptional shibayama panels of ivory with carved semi-precious stones. Very unusually this little carriage clock has shibayama panels on all sides including the top and also the base ( so panels on six sides).
The clock is signed on the white enamel dial and hallmarked.
It has its original leather travelling case ( also signed) and has its winding and adjusting key fitted within the back door of the carriage clock.
The fine movement is of 8 day duration and regulated by a fine lever escapement.

Hallmarked for William Thornhill, London 1880.

The Shibayama technique was named after Shibayama Dosho, who introduced it in Japan in the 18th century. It was used exclusively on items for import to the West.
Shibayama is the art of semiprecious stones, shell, turtleshell etc inlayed on lacquer and ivory pieces. The items decorated in the Shibayama style range from vases, boxes and table-screens to swords and entire ivory tusks.
However he cannot be said to have invented it, but, as has been observed of many other Japanese applied arts, the perfecting of the method was mistaken for its origin.
