Antique silver, guilloche and hand painted enamel hand mirror.
A quite extraordinary tour de force and one of the finest hand mirrors that I have ever seen. The mirror itself in excellent condition and perfectly clear and unblemished.
The mirror, in solid silver and engine turned with sky blue guilloche enamel and with hand painted roses around both sides of the circular mirror enclosure.
On the reverse of the mirror is a quite marvellous scene handpainted in watercolour circle 5 inches in diameter. The scene is set in the early 18th century of a group of 20 well dressed men and women in a parkland setting amusing themselves and playing a game of blind man's buff.
The miniature is signed in the bottom left hand side " Somter".
Below this at the juncture of the handle is a cartouche in hand painted enamel within heavily engraved silver scrolling, a portrait of a man in 17th century dress walking within a floral swag. On the reverse is a similar cartouche but the subject is a young woman on a swing held by a tree within a similar floral swagTo the base is another cartouche within engraved silver of on one side a woman seated within flowers and holding a fan and on the other side a seated man playing a guitar.
The mirror is signed in the silver and in a cartouche BF sterling and 935 and on the other side Made in Austria.
