Antique Bontems singing bird automaton timepiece, circa 1850.
Fine early Bontems birds in a tree automaton with clock and running water automaton. Set upon a fine gilt wood and gesso base and under a glass dome. The clock movement stamped 'Vincenti', The scene typical of the French maker, comprising a tree growing on a rocky outcrop over a waterfall set next to the dial with realistic lichens, moss and plants modelled in wool and silk, seven birds, two beetles and two butterflies, the lower-most bird sings, moves its head and between songs it dips down to drink from the water of the automated stream, the upper-most bird flaps its wings, the white enamel dial with Roman numerals and a gilt beaded bezel, the timepiece movement with a silk suspension. France circa 1850-60. 70cm (27.5in) high, 58cm (22.5in) wide. There is an almost identical version of this piece illustrated in Bailly's "Flights of Fancy" pp 302 although Bailly's version does not have as many birds in the tree and has a plain black base rather than this versions outstanding rococco gilt wood and gesso base.
