French Empire antique mantel clock of Minerva riding the chariot of Diomedes.

French Empire antique mantel clock of Minerva riding the chariot of Diomedes.
Fine antique French Empire ormolu mantel clock of a chariot drawn by two horses and carrying the charioteer and a female figure with shield, helmet and spear. This superb clock with original ormolu represents Minerva riding the chariot of Diomedes ( this is also the Greek Athena and Telemachus), a great warrior of the Trojan Wars. The ormolu is completely original but uncleaned, it has lain in an attick of a private house for many years. The clock has all of the original traces for the horses and the original reins. Very fine casting throughout. The dial is set into the chariot wheel which has finely cast spokes. The convex enamel dial is annular and so reveals the front plate work of the movement. The movement is a silk suspension 8 day going and bell striking the hours and halves by means of a countwheel. French circa 1810. See Niehuser "French Bronze Clocks" pp 69. 18 inches high, 20 wide and 5 inches deep ( 45cm X 50cm x 12.5 cm).
