Antique French mantel clock of two women holding up time.

Antique French mantel clock of two women holding up time.
Monumental antique French mantel clock in original ormolu and white marble. Set upon a white marble base with ormolu feet and applied ormolu mounts the clock itself is held aloft by two beautiful classically dressed female figures. The women have their arms raised and their hair up and between them hold the shaped and reeded marble movement holder. This is surmounted by a figure of Cupid firing an arrow of love and below it terminates in a bud finial. The whole housing is festooned with swags of acanthus and of laurel.. The convex white enamel dial with Arabic hour numerals and 15 minutes markers has swags of hand painted flowers between the hour markers. The hands are of Louis XVIth design and are of pierced gilt bronze. The key wound movement is of 8 day duration regulated by a lever escapement ( like a carriage clock so requires no pendulum) and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Paris, France circa 1870. 32inches high (80 cm)
