Fine antique French Romantic period mantel clock of large size and with original ormolu.
The subject is that of Aurora who in ancient times was believed to lift the darkness of night and brought in the dawn.
She stands upon a domed base that represents the sky and there are beautifully cast and chased heads below the base
representing the wind or Zephyr.
Aurora herself is draped in classical, floating dress and is a most beautiful woman superbly modelled. She has wings on her back.
She holds in her arms the cloak of darkness with which asvdawn comes she will reveal the coming Sun.
Around the cloak are the hand painted hour numerals that forms the dial of this clock.
The hands are of blued steel and of Breguet moon form.
The movement is of 8 day duration striking the hours and halves on a bell by means of the countwheel system of striking. The time is regulated by a silk suspended pendulum.
