Cast in the late 19th century after the model by Guillaume Coustou the Elder (1677-1746) Horses Restrained By Grooms known as the Horses of Marly that were produced in Paris between 1739-1745,

Commissioned by Louis XV for the horse-pond at the Chateau de Marly.
These were in turn his interpretation of 4th century AD Roman copies of earlier Greek originals.
The theme is of course head over heart or of intellect training or restraining force.
These two models are very well cast and of excellent colour and condition.
