Antique French Charles X mantel clock with figure of the "Crouching Venus".
A very large clock in original patinated bronze and original gilt bronze or ormolu.
The rectangular base with ormolu bun feet and applied ormolu wreath mounts to each side, and a fine ormolu moulding of stiff leaf and dart. Surrounding the gilt bronze dial is a superb bezel of laurel leaf with forgt-me-not flowers and to each side of the dial is an applied mount of Anthemion and forget-me-not flowers .
The superb and very large early 19th century bronze is of the "Crouching Venus" and as she kneels on a tortoise the model has been taken from the version sculpted by Coysevox and completed in 1686. Many different versions of the "Crouching or Kneeling Venus" are known and many date from great antiquity as Pliny mentions such a figure.
The movement is of 8 day duration, strikes the hours and halves on a bell by means of the countwheel system of striking and is regulated by a silk suspended pendulum.
The clock is French dating from 1825-30.
25 inches high by 15 inches wide by 7.5 inches deep, the figure alone is 14 inches high ( 62.5 cm by 37.5 cm by 18.75 cm and 35 cm).
